Through your generosity—along with support from partners like Power Home Remodeling, our scholars are thriving in the classroom, on the field, and beyond.

The school year is off to a strong start for the Radnor A Better Chance scholars, who continue to impress both in and out of the classroom. From AP coursework and leadership roles to new activities and community service, this group embodies the spirit of curiosity, perseverance, and connection that defines the Radnor ABC experience.

At Radnor High School, all of our scholars are taking on new challenges—many in advanced courses—and nearly all are active in the Black Student Union, where they continue to build community and amplify student voices. Our upperclassmen are diving into SAT prep, college research, and leadership roles, while younger scholars are exploring new interests and learning the rhythms of high school life.

Malachai kicked off senior year with a major recognition, she was named one of Radnor High School’s Students of the Month in September, a testament to her leadership and hard work. She’s also balancing cheer, AP coursework, and her responsibilities as a BSU officer. Fellow seniors Naima and Bradley are keeping busy, too. Naima continues to shine on the cheer team and in her early-morning medical careers program (Medical Careers through Delaware County Intermediate Unit). Few of us would jump at the chance to be at school before dawn, but Naima’s drive to explore a future in medicine makes those early hours worth it. Meanwhile Bradley’s fall has been filled with football, two AP classes, and preparations for college applications.

The juniors continue to grow as leaders and active members of the school community. Kirstyn, president of Best Buddies and vice president of Pursuit of Inner Peace, has been networking with other student leaders and representing her peers on the school board facilities committee. Luci has been climbing the tennis ranks, now the team’s third seed, and continues to participate in theater and contribute to FACETS, Radnor’s creative writing magazine. Ryan is back on the football field and gearing up for basketball season, balancing athletics with his academic goals and SAT prep.

Among our underclassmen, Vanity continues to inspire with her creativity—she founded the Rubik’s Cube Club and performs in both Color Guard and theatre. Michael, who is recovering from a football injury, has remained a supportive teammate and has become an unofficial mentor to McKinley—new scholar and fellow sophomore—showing him the ropes at RHS and at the house. McKinley is settling in well, focusing on academics while exploring his interests in music production. Freshman Chinoo, also a new scholar, has jumped right into high school life—joining Color Guard, playing cello in the school orchestra, and looking forward to trying new sports this spring.

Many of these opportunities are made possible thanks to Power Home Remodeling. Their financial support helps fund activities, athletic fees, and enrichment experiences that shape our scholars’ high school journeys. Their generosity allows our students to discover what they love and who they are through hands-on experiences beyond the classroom.

This fall also brought one of the highlights of the year– our annual retreat, which took place at Gretna Glen this year. Between team-building challenges, archery, and fishing, where Bradley proved himself quite the fisherman, the weekend was filled with laughter and connection. Seniors planned activities for the downtime: Naima and Malachai planned relay races and Bradley created a manhunt game with a fun trivia component. As night fell, scholars gathered around the campfire to share reflections over s’mores. Some of our seniors grew emotional as they looked back on how far they’ve come and how close this community has grown.

This program is largely run by volunteers. Special thanks to board member Isabel Clark for planning such a meaningful retreat weekend and to everyone who helps make experiences like these possible. Board member Debbie Lofton and a handful of volunteers ensure that each scholar is paired with a volunteer academic mentor who supports them throughout their academic journey. This is a critical part of the Radnor A Better Chance experience, and we are so grateful for their dedication. Our scholars are thriving because they’re surrounded by people who believe in them, both in their academic endeavors and in every aspect of their lives as developing young adults.

Ahead of Thanksgiving break, the scholars hosted a Friendsgiving celebration at the house, showcasing hidden talents in decorating, baking, and preparing an impressive holiday meal—beautifully complemented by sides contributed by volunteers and community members. It was a wonderful reminder of the vibrant, intentional community these remarkable scholars continue to build. Wishing them—and all of you—a very happy Thanksgiving!
