Did you know you wanted to study Broadcast & Digital Journalism while you were at Radnor High School?
Honestly? Not at all. In high school, I was laser-focused on grades and whatever sport was in season. Journalism wasn't even on my radar until senior year when college applications rolled around.
How did you become interested in Broadcast & Digital Journalism, specifically for sports?
When I started applying to schools, I knew I wanted to stay connected to sports somehow; I just didn't know if that meant being in front of the camera or behind it. Syracuse and Newhouse weren't even on my list until I did some last-minute research. Once I learned about the program and some of the legendary alumni, something clicked. I thought, "This is it."
Sports media is notoriously tough to break into. How did Radnor ABC and Syracuse set you up for success?
Both prepared me in totally different ways. Radnor ABC helped me shed my shy shell and become a person. Living with other students, attending community events, playing sports, I learned how to communicate with people without being awkward. Syracuse was where everything came together. The friends and mentors I met over those four years shaped who I am today. I must recognize Professors Olivia Stomski and Jordan Kligerman, and Assistant Director Mylinda Smith. They believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself. Every friendship I made at 'Cuse means the world to me. Without those people, I honestly don't know where I'd be right now.
Describe a day in the life as a PA at ESPN.
I'm on the RISE team, which creates short specialty content for ESPN studio shows. Currently, I focus on making “bumps” (transitional segments) for SportsCenter. I work the night shift, so I arrive at 4 pm and help produce bumps for the early evening shows. I grab dinner around 7 PM and, afterward, provide feedback to the team on their content pieces. I collaborate with the night crew copy team, who are busy prepping for the 12 AM ESPN SportsCenter hosted by Scott Van Pelt. I make the bumps, watch them air, and head home around 1 am. Can’t ask for a better learning opportunity.
Who's the most famous person you've seen in the ESPN studios?
This moment hit differently. I was walking back from the studios, and there's Elle Duncan in the makeup area, dancing to Bad Bunny. She says, "What up!" I respond, "How's it going?" as we pass each other. I had to remind myself this wasn't a dream, that this is just my everyday now, which still feels unreal.
Long term, do you see yourself in front of or behind the camera?
Behind. I flirted with the idea of being on-camera early in college, but that changed once I started directing. That's the dream…directing is where I want to be.
What are you most excited about in the next 3-5 years?
Learning from and building trust with my new coworkers as I settle into post-grad life. I'm also excited to keep pushing toward becoming a full-time director, whether that's for studio shows or live events. I'm pumped to make new friends at ESPN while staying close with all the people who helped me get here.
